I'm a technology addict and I've been following the development of ChromeOS for a while. When it first came out, I totally understood the concept but wanted to wait for it to mature a while and the prices to come down. My trigger price point was $200 so when the 2GB version of C720 came out, I had to have one.

I find it amazing that such an inexpensive device can do so much. After having it a week, it became my favorite machine just because it is so simple and light. After using it, you come to question why we need such big computing power, huge hard discs and RAM just to run a traditional OS when it comes to supporting the use cases for about 90% of what you use a PC to do. Whats even better, the Chromebook is pretty much ready to go out of the box, with an already pretty rich supply of online an offline apps don't cost you anything extra.

Just like tablets came on the market and turned the PC industry upside down because they did 80% of a PC did, and did it with a better user experience, lower price with much less hardware spec. In the same way, I think the Chromebook will have a permanent place in personal tech as the one matching basic needs at the cheapest price - a second PC for around the home, or the "throwaway" unit for travel where you don't have to worry about damaging or losing it because its both cheap and highly secure.

Specific to the C720 - I agree with most that the screen could be much better but it is still quite acceptable considering the price. The trackpad and the keyboard as well - I have no trouble using them and the trackpad is actually better than many more expensive PCs. I think the build quality is actually quite good - it looks professional and robust enough so that it can survive a road warrior's abuse.

The 2GB ram is also the best value in my opinion. I've read a comparison report that showed that the 4GB really has no advantage until you open up 15-20 tabs at once, anything less than that the performance is identical. My own experience (I usually open up only 5 to 10 tabs at once) is that browsing performance is excellent - comparable to my 2013 MacBook Air with 8GB RAM that cost 5x the price. - By Bruce Sweigert

Rating technology is tricky since it relys on the acumen of the user. So first a bit about me.

I am an average tech user. I know how to fix basic problems but I really don't care about the small details as long as my device is functional.

Uses: Mainly this device would be for travel or meetings.

Pros:

It is small 10.1 screen

The battery is detachable, which makes it easier to switch out.

The battery life is decent: I got a little less than 5 hours from a mix of internet searches, video watching and photo editing.

The operating system is actually 8.1.

It came with Microsoft Office Home and Student.

It was very easy to set up.

It is a very functional little computer for a good price.

It has built in Windows security software

The keyboard was just right for me but then I have rather small hands.

It stays pretty cool when you have it on your lap for hours at a time.

Cons:

The touchscreen is responsive but I found that sometimes it was easy to accidentally go to a previous page or another screen entirely by touching the wrong part of the screen.

It takes an inordinate amount of time to download things (but that could be attributed to my wifi)

They have a somewhat limited selection of "apps" some of them (like a microphone) are already on your computer.

The whole windows 8 interface is more of a step sideways than a step forward.

There is not much information out there on this computer. Not even on HP's website. If you go looking for this elsewhere it has another name:

I bought this ThinkPad for backing up my business pc which is failing. This one starts fast, runs quiet, has a very good screen, and is reasonable fast. The Window 7 Pro was easy to work with and easier than Windows 8 Pro. Very good keyboard. This could easily become a very productive note book. I bought the Plugable dual monitor docking station and the E545 lit up both external monitors. The one problem I had was when trying to install Office 2010 Pro, it said the dvd was empty. First let me couch my comments by saying I am a retired IT guy. I think most people will be very happy with this machine although I think it is only a steps above a mediocre machine.

What made me decide to consider the purchase was the manufacture and hardware. Lenovo is one of the top 3 laptop builders as of Spring 2014. Apple, ACER and Lenovo are regarded as the 3 best in that order. I also liked that fact they used top quality hardware in the build. The AMD process gets a good rating for a RISC processor. The RAM is expandable to 16GB. The HDD is a WD which is the best HD maker currently. I do wish they had installed a 500GB instead of the 320. The USB3 ports will accept USB2 drives. I also liked the extended keyboard with the number pad. I use this on my desktop for entering numbers in spreadsheets. I liked the low heat generation as well as their BIOS. It is all good hardware and software. The big disappointment has been no bluetooth. All the ads and reviews said it had bluetooth but it does not. If you need bluetooth for your phone or other device, this is not the machine for you.

It is a speedy little machine. I installed Office Pro 2010 on it and have no problems with its operation. I have also loaded Any Video Converter and Photoshop. It does a decent job of processing video and images. It's not the greatest at it but I didn't purchase it to process video. This is really a business machine. I crunch numbers and run Access DB.

What has put me off has been the operation of the machine. I built my 1st PC in 1985. I use key commands as much as I use the mouse or trackpad. This has been my biggest problem with this laptop. For example, I rarely exit apps by clicking on the "X" in the upper right of the open window (as 95% of others do). I use the ALT + F4 to kill open apps. Much to my dismay I have found I must hold the FN + ALT + F4 keys. I also use the native Function keys as windows has set them for years. With this laptop I must hold down the FN key and then press the F key I want. Otherwise it turns on/off the mic, the WIFI, etc. I have not looked in the BIOS to see if this can be reset to a default setting. Maybe someone out knows and can let me know.

I do like the keyboard and find it easy to type on and use. However I am still trying to adjust to the trackpad. I initially liked the idea of a track pad that took advantage of the Apple type press mechanism to launch actions. However I am finding my wrist getting sore with all the pressing. Fortunately Lenovo retained the tap/double tap with your finger to launch. I also like the 2 finger press to right click but it doesn't always work for me. I have resorted to using the bottom edge of the trackpad with my thumb to activate the right click.

Overall this is a good laptop but needs usability rethinking by Lenovo... or maybe I'm just geeking to old ;^)

Still getting used to it, which will take some time with the new Windows 8 structure. So far, it has been extremely fast and reliable. Some features I disabled, as they constantly got in the way, but that's just due to me not being used to the new OS. A mouse is a great investment because of personal preference. I was able to find this for $499 instead of the listed price on this page and it is a worth-while investment, so far.

Edited. This new OS takes some time to get used to, but in all, it's really fast and helpful. I have been able to do what I need and more with this laptop. There are a few things that have upset me, but not too bad in all. The battery life is shorter than I expected, maybe it's because of how often I use it or something. Updates in the past have affected the system all-together; I had to factory reset due to a graphics card update that made the screen go black. Quick fix was to just downgrade to the previous graphics card update before the affected one. In all, this has been a fairly reliable laptop and has done what I've needed it to do. - By A. Schaffer

Well I got this laptop a couple of days ago. I really love it. The processor is really fast, I have a really good amount of memory on here and the hard drive is really spacious. Windows 8 takes some getting used to but once you get used to it's really cool. I really love the finger print scanner too. The only thing that kind of really sucks is the battery life. It can last about 4 hours. It's not really so bad. I was just hoping the battery life would be a bit longer. For those of you that would consider this a deal breaker, consider getting an hp envy with a 4th generation intel processor. The battery life on those are insane. If battery life isn't an issue, then well I swear you'll love this laptop :)

I seriously would recommend this to all my friends.

This is really great if you're a student, doing business, or just want to play games.

But overall, this is worth the buy. Just make sure to get virus protection, A 2 year warranty, and a case if you plan taking it out. - By Bianca

I'm writing from this laptop now. I still need to get used to te keyboard, but it is very nice. The touchscreen works very welll and the battery life is reasonable once you mess around with it in settings. Windows 8 does take some getting used to but it is very sleek and user friendly. Probably the only thing I don't like so far is that the mouse pad clicker ( Why can't I think of what this is?), whatever you call it, it's pretty loud But so far that's my only complaint. O picked one up last weekend. It is a full blown computer in tablet format. I have had other tablets but they were so limited, this one is not.

Be aware that the storage space is better than some of the Apple Centric reviewers say. Included in the drive is a full copy of Office 2013. You do have to buy a license but it is already on the drive. Also there is a full back up image.

The battery life is a little low for a tablet, I am getting about 5 1/2 hours but that is of constant use.

The screen resolution is amazing, I think better than the iPad which is also excellent resolution.

So far there is nothing that it will not do. It is not a high powered desktop replacement but when I am out of my office it does everything I ask. My notebook now sits on my nightstand and is used there. I carry the Surface Pro everywhere.

The prices quoted here on Amazon are very high, check the retail price before you pay a premium.

The Microsoft store I went to last weekend sold out a pile of them (literally a pyramid) in about three hours but they say that more are on the way.

I have an Acer C720 ($199) and an Acer C720P ($299) and both are amazing machines. If you dont mind plunking down the extra $100 for the touchscreen then go for it but really you will do fine without it and save yourself $100 especially if you are buying these as gifts like I did for others in my family.

Here is a list of the APPS I use on both and it runs them fast and flawlessly:

Facebook, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Chrome Remote Desktop (flawlessly connects to my Windows 7 laptop and I can run any windows program remotely with ease and flawlessly connects to my Office Desktop and I can access all my office records which is key since i am a family doc), Google Cloud Print (easily prints documents to all the printers i have set up), MyBible, Kindle, Twitter, Hootsuite, Weatherbug, Netflix, Pandora, YouTube, Google+ photos (automatically puts all my photos taken on my Iphone over to my chromebook), RUNS ALL WEBSITES INCLUDING BANKING WEBSITES and my mobile hospital app FLAWLESSLY WITH CHROME (including adobe flash player sites which my Ipad and Iphone still wont run)

The only CONS i can find so far are no SKYPE app.....If you want to do video calls then need to use GOOGLE HANGOUTS which is much less intuitive than skype....and you CANNOT hook a printer directly to a chromebook but you can use google cloud print to print easily...needs wifi connection to do most things (this is really not a problem for me as i am always connected and they have developed a number of apps that work when not connected including document writer and email offline

Battery Life Amazing! almost 8hrs of use!

Touchscreen good but not like an Ipad (can't use your fingers to zoom in with pinch)

Touchpad very good! (and really dont need the touchscreen because touchpad works so good)

Keyboard very solid,

Can use any wireless mouse with it. (Ipad still cant utilize a mouse)

Screen brightness great.

Sound adequate but a bit tinny

USB port charges devices and can use flash drives to move and transfer files (another thing I still cant do with my Ipad)

2 years free of 100GB Google Drive (this saves you $120 right there)

12 free wifi passes while on planes (i dont fly much but still a nice convenience and saves you the $10 or so connection fee)

Free virus protection

All in all a great economical way to access the internet with ease and lightning speed and do 95% of what most people use a personal computer for this day and age. - By drkcope

Kind of hard to find a Win 7 laptop, but this one is still available and reallyfills the bill. The Win 7 is a proven operating system and this has the most updated version. It works slawlessly, as does the computer. I work at a large hospital. We receive 40-50 IBM laptops every few months. All patient/supply work is done on Thinkpads and Lenovos. I am not fan of Windows 8 yet. This Toshiba Satellite C55-A5245 15.6 inch laptop is a deal at the price. Came with 4GB Ram. Opened the cover to look at the ram storage slots. There are 2 slots and only one is used with a single 4 GB Memory card. This laptop can expand up to 16 GB Ram.. Came loaded with Norton--I deleted it immediately and loaded Windows Essential Security which is fine and it is free. The satin black in trax horizon finish on this laptop is beautiful and somewhat like the Dell Matte finish that I have seen. So far, I am very pleased with this laptop. - By LARRY

Pros: easy set up, keys click nicely, number pad on right side. 3 USB port (left side 1 near back, 2 on right are too close to the front). It's quite fast (compared to my old one which was average at best), has lots of memory, decent speaker system, built in mic and camera which all work just fine. it's lightweight and for the price - a good buy.

Cons: The function keys must have the FN key used (all others I've used, you don't have to remember to hit that) the default on those keys are the brightness, media functions. That may be just me who thinks that is a 'con' but there ya have it. The space bar is a little short. It came (like most laptops) with some preinstalled stuff which had to be uninstalled - again personal preference. - By Mia
